Germany: Contractworld.award 2009
2008-04-17 13:15

International architecture competition for innovative interior design concepts gets under way once more:

* Prize money increased to 60,000 euros
* Closing date for entries: 6 June 2008
* New entry category: Change of use/Conversion of existing buildings

Hannover. Deutsche Messe Hannover invites entries for "contractworld.award 2009". The prestigious European architecture prize for interior design is now being offered for the ninth successive year. In order to make the competition even more attractive for all those taking part, the total prize money for 2009 has been increased to 60,000 euros. The award is the most valuable of its kind in Europe. In the words of Stephan Ph. Kühne, member of the Board of Deutsche Messe AG: "The contractworld. award has established itself as a firm fixture in the international world of architecture and design. We are looking forward with great interest to this year's entries and new ideas." Intending entrants can register for the competition up until 6 June 2008.

The contractworld.award is presented each year for innovative interior design concepts in four categories. In addition to the three established categories "Offices/Administration buildings", "Hotels/Spas/Catering facilities" and "Shops/Showrooms/ Exhibition stands", this year's competition also invites entries in the new category "Change of use/Conversion". Here the focus is on conversions of buildings originally constructed for religious, cultural or public use, such as churches, monasteries/ convents and railway stations, plus derelict industrial buildings, which have been redesigned and structurally altered to serve a new purpose. In addition, two special awards will be presented, each to the value of € 2000. These will be awarded exclusively to "New Generation" entrants (architects/ interior designers under the age of 40) responsible for avant-garde projects.

The category "Offices/Administration buildings" now adds studios to a list that comprises office buildings, administration buildings (e.g. for banks, insurance companies, government departments and local authorities), conference and congress centres. The category "Hotels/ Spas/Catering facilities" now includes casinos. And the third main category "Shops/Showrooms/Exhibition stands" has been extended to include shop concepts, shopping centres and malls.

The judges are looking for fully realized, integrated design concepts that stand out by virtue of their quality, functionality and aesthetic value, and their innovative treatment of space, materials, colour and surface texture or finish.

For the 2009 contractworld.award competition entrants may submit projects that have been completed after 31 December 2004. Each of the four categories can accommodate a broad spectrum of entries. A maximum of three projects per entrant may be submitted in one or more categories.

The prizes will be awarded on 17 January 2009 during DOMOTEX HANNOVER 2009 (17 - 20 January), the world's leading trade fair for floor coverings. At contractworld manufacturers will be presenting their product ranges aimed specifically at the contract furnishing sector. Architects and interior designers from Germany and many other countries will be meeting here to form opinions and exchange views. An important part of this networking process is the contractworld.congress, with its extensive program of lectures, seminars and conferences. With around 2,500 delegates, this is now the largest annual architectural convention of its kind in Europe.

The contractworld.award gives prize-winners a great opportunity to raise their international profile. "The prize helps us to gain credibility. If, like us, you work in the area of speculative architecture, and don't have many finished buildings to show for your efforts, then an award like this is really important", says Kamiel Klaase from NL Architects in Amsterdam, who won one of the 2008 contractworld.awards last January. All the prize-winning projects are showcased in a special exhibition organized by Deutsche Messe Hannover at contractworld, as well as being documented in a lavishly produced catalogue published after the show.
